In a collaborative effort with the Departments of Medico-Surgical Gastroenterology and Immunology,
Hôpital Erasme, and the Department of General Surgery of the
University Hospital of Ghent, the IMI contributes to develop a new strategy of immunosuppression in liver transplantation with
Vincent Donckier, MD-PhD, as Principal Investigator. This innovative approach, based on previous studies in experimental models, consists in the infusion of donor stems cells to reduce the need for immunosuppression. The study appeared in the October issue of
Liver Transplantation (vol 12: pp. 1523-1528, 2006), a journal published jointly by The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society. It was accompanied by a "highlight editorial" authored by Prof. Thomas Starzl (Transplantation Institute, Pittsburgh, USA), a pioneer in the field of solid organ transplantation.
