Reprogramming the Immune System for the Establishment of Tolerance
Integrating European Research on Immune Tolerance, a key step building a better future for transplanted patients. Transplantation dramatically improves survival of patients with established organ failure. Nevertheless, as a direct consequence of immunosuppressive drugs, the recipients have a significantly increased risk of infection and malignancy. RISET is an integrated research project financed by the European Commission focusing on translation of scientific advances in the field of immune tolerance into transplantation medicine and industrial development. Tolerance in transplantation is defined as the permanent acceptance of the transplant in the absence of continuous immunosuppression. This ambitious goal is tackled through several approaches:
  • Development of reliable tests to predict tolerance: identify transplant recipients who are truly tolerant or require minimal immunosuppression
  • Monitoring of patients enrolled in pilot clinical trials where immunosuppression is minimized
  • Identification of new genes and molecules relevant for our understanding of the molecular pathways leading to transplantation tolerance
  • Careful consideration of ethical aspects of clinical investigations in transplantation
  • Development of educational programs

At present, RISET involves 21 partners from 10 different EU Member States. This project is coordinated by Pr. M. GOLDMAN at IMI-ULB with the support of a Steering Committee composed of Pr. K. WOOD (University of Oxford), Pr. L. CHATENOUD (Université René Descartes, Paris), Pr. M.-C. CUTURI (University Hospital, Nantes), Pr. H.-D. VOLK (Charité Hospital, Berlin), and Pr. R. LECHLER (King's College, London).
